Recipe Ingredients
6 apples
1 tablespoon light karo syrup
8oz brown sugar
2½ fl oz water
1oz butter
1 tablespoon vinegar
you will also need
Craft sticks
Baking sheet
Baking parchment
Cellophane or wax paper (optional)
Preparation and cooking instructions
First line a baking sheet with baking parchment and wash
the apples, then dry them on kitchen paper and remove their
stalks. Next, in place of the stalks push the craft sticks
into the apples until they hold firm and leave them to one
side. Now put the sugar, butter, vinegar, karo syrup and water
into a heavy-based saucepan and stirring well heat gently
until the sugar has dissolved, then turn up the heat and boil
the mixture for about 20 minutes. Now fill a small mixing
bowl with cold water and drop a little of the toffee into
the water, if it hardens and becomes brittle and a thin piece
will easily snap then it’s ready, if not then continue
to boil and test again. Next remove the pan from the heat,
take an apple on its stick and dip and twirl the apple in
the toffee until it’s well coated, then place on the
lined baking sheet until cold and hard. When cold eat, or
wrap and secure the apple in cellophane or wax paper and store
in an airtight container somewhere cool. These Halloween toffee
apples will then keep for a couple of days. Have a ghostly
Halloween !
