Recipe Ingredients
Small pork sausages
1 cup flour
5 tablespoons cold butter
About 3 tablespoons iced water
Pinch of salt
You will also need
Baking Sheets
Wax paper
Preparation and cooking instructions
First heat a little oil in a frypan or skillet and turning
frequently cook the sausages, and when done drain on paper
towel and allow to cool. Next sift the flour into a large
mixing bowl, then add the butter. Now, with a knife, cut the
butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
Next sprinkle the iced water over the mixture and mix so that
it begins to clump together and form a dough; then with your
hands lightly bring the dough together - if you think the
dough is too dry just add a little more iced water. Now halve
the dough and pat down each half to form chubby discs. Wrap
each disc in wax paper and place in the refrigerator to rest
for about half an hour. After the dough has rested preheat
the oven to 425°F, and sprinkle a suitable surface or
board and a rolling pin with flour. Then take one of the discs
from the refrigerator and rollout the dough thinly. Now, using
a sausage as a guide, cut the dough into strips that are slightly
wider than the length of the sausage - this is so that the
ends can be sealed together - and long enough to wrap around
the sausage with an overlap. To make the ‘face’
of the mummy, take one of the rectangles of pastry and with
a very small plain round cookie cutter or a well washed thimble
cut a hole a short distance away and in about the middle of
the edge of the pastry that corresponds with the end of the
sausage. Now dampen the edges of the pastry with water and
wrap the pastry around the sausage, overlap the edges and
press to seal, then press the ends together to seal them.
Then place the mummies on an ungreased baking sheet. Repeat
with the remaining dough and sausages and bake the mummies
for about 15 to 20 minutes or until done. Have a ghoulish
Halloween !
